Group G has been labeled the “Group of Death” at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa starting in just over two weeks. Brazil are the beasts of the group, with Portugal and the Ivory Coast right behind, and North Korea as the outcasts. Brazil holds the record for most World Cup wins but this group is no slouch.

Brazil lost to France in the quarterfinals of the 2006 World Cup but new coach and former World Cup winning captain Dunga has instilled a more aggressive style of play in the team. Brazil won the CONBEBOL qualification for the World Cup with only two losses. They also have shown they can play well in South Africa, winning the Confederations Cup a year ago. FIFA ranks Brazil #1 in the world and it would be quite an upset if Kaka and the rest of the squad didn’t make it out of Group G.

Portugal made it to the semifinals in the last World Cup, but lost in the quarterfinals at Euro 2008. The Portuguese don’t have talent like Luis Figo or Rui Costa anymore, but they do have Cristiano Ronaldo. They struggled in qualification and sneaked past Bosnia-Herzegovina in a playoff to finish behind a mediocre Danish team. Portugal had four draws in their 10 qualification matches, so they may struggle against teams like the Ivory Coast.

The Ivory Coast was getting a lot of hype before the World Cup draw. Many of their players have Champions League experience in Europe, including captain Didier Drogba. He was the Premier League’s top goalscorer this season and the club will have confidence playing in Africa. But, they have choked on the big stage like the recent quarterfinal loss to Algeria in the African Cup of Nations. North Korea is making a rare World Cup appearance after qualifying for only the second time with a runner up finish behind South Korea in the Asian group. They won the AFC Asian Cup earlier this year after a penalty shootout with Turkmenistan in the final.
