With my early Final Four picks in, it’s time to cover the sleepers. These are some under-the-radar teams I predict to make a splash in the NCAA Tournament. Actually, some aren’t so under the radar anymore given their past success during March Madness but they can still be called Cinderella teams. These are three underrated teams I expect to go far in the tournament.
First up is No. 6 St. John’s. The Red Storm are in perhaps the easiest region. The Southeast top seeds like Pittsburgh, Florida and BYU all aren’t that strong compared to the rest of the country. St. John’s knows how to fill the lane and create turnover on defense. The Red Storm are without third-leading D.J. Kennedy but they beat six ranked squads, including Duke and Pittsburgh. With eight healthy seniors, they are primed for a big run.
Their biggest game comes right off the bat against No. 11 Gonzaga, another one of my sleeper picks. Yes, these are two talented teams that could go far in the tournament. It’s too bad they were matched up in the second round because each of them have the potential to upset some top seeds. Gonzaga lost some tough non-conference games early in the season but that experience should help in the tournament. The West Cost Conference Tournament champions haven’t lost a game in more than a month and Pittsburgh looks to be the only big roadblock beyond St. John’s.
No. 7 Washington is my last sleeper for the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies were struggling going into the Pac-10 Tournament have won three in a row. They are getting maturity from freshmen C.J. Wilcox and Terrence Ross. Venoy Overton is back and provides another boost at guard. They face Georgia in the second round and would probably face North Carolina next, which hasn’t played up to potential this year.
