While the PGA Tour continues with the Houston Open, the European Tour has the Hassan II Golf Trophy teeing of Thursday. With many of the top-ranked players in America, only four of the world’s top 100 are playing in the Moroccan event at the Royal Golf Dars Es Salam. Raphael Jacquelin is the outright favorite at 14/1 odds.
The Trophee Hassan II is the last European Tour event before next week’s U.S. Masters. World No. 77 Jacquelin has risen to 17th in the Race to Dubai rankings. He started 2011 with just one top 20 finish in his first four appearances, but has since won the Sicilian Open for his third European career title and finished fourth in the Open de Andalucia last week. The Frenchman finished 56th here last year so he isn’t a lock.
Thomas Bjorn is second in the odds after tying for 13th here least year. The Dane is ranked 65th in the world and is seventh in the Race to Dubai standings. He won the Qatar Masters for his 11th tour title, finished tied for 17th in the WGC-Accenture Matchplay Championship, finished tied for 28th in the WGC-Cadillac Championship and came in fourth in the Tavistock Cup. With a weaker field in Morroco, he is worth backing.
Rafael Cabrera-Bellos is next in the betting and has five top 20 finishes in six starts. He is 126th in the world rankings but hasn’t shown the poise since finishing third in the Qatar Masters. He finished 11th at Andalucia with a couple of great finals rounds so he could get his first tour win of the year this week.
Jose Manuel Lara finished third in the Sicilian Open and tied for eighth at Andalucia after starting with one top 20 finish in four appearances. Joost Luiten finished 14th at Hassan last year but hasn’t cracked the top 10 in six events this year. Chris Wood leads the British contingent and is still looking for his first tour win. He missed the cut at Andalucia but had two top 10 finishes before that, including a runner-up play-off in the Africa Open. Rhys Davies is the defending Hassan champion after winning it for his first tour title, but he is too much of a longshot this year.
