The last Major of the year begins on Thursday with the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. World #1 Tiger Woods has been the most hotly debated golfer all season and the 14-time Major winner comes in second in the sports betting odds preceding the tournament.

Woods is coming off his worst tournament in his career at the Bridgestone Invitational, yet bookmakers have him priced quite low. It might be better value to take the short odds on him missing the cut, given his recent form. Leading the odds is World #2 Phil Mickelson, who had shades of greatness in the Bridgestone Invitational, but faltered in the last round to finish well down the field.

World #3 Lee Westwood is out with a calf injury so World #8 Rory McIlroy and 2008 PGA Champion Padraig Harrington will lead the European challenge. Both Irishmen finished in a tie for 9th at Bridgestone and have several top 10 finishes this season. Bridgestone winner Hunter Mahan has improved tremendously in his last three events. Prior to that, he missed four straight cuts. He won twice on the tour this year, but has been inconsistent.

You can’t count out veterans Retief Goosen or Ernie Els for your online betting either. Goosen led after two rounds at Bridgestone last week before falling in the third and finished in a tie for third. Els also had some good signs and finished tied for 22nd. Both men have good each-way value. The longshot is Jim Furyk, who has played well lately and won twice this year. The World #5 looked to be the likely winner last week, but finished tied for 6th. He is overdue for a second Major championship to add to his 2003 U.S. Open title.

PGA Championship Outright Odds (provided by Party Bets)

Phil Mickelson: 11/1

Tiger Woods: 14/1

Rory McIlroy: 14/1

Padraig Harrington: 18/1

Steve Stricker: 20/1

Hunter Mahan: 25/1

Ernie Els: 28/1

Retief Goosen: 30/1

Jim Furyk: 30/1

Sean O’Hair: 30/1

Justin Rose: 33/1
