The Wells Fargo Championship tees off Thursday at Quail Hollow in North Carolina. Rory McIlroy edged out Phil Mickelson for the title last year but Mickelson leads the odds this year.
Mickelson looks to be the man to back in this PGA Tour event with six top 12 finishes in seven events at Quail Hollow. Despite winning the Houston Open, he hasn’t shown much this year and finished tied for 27th at the Masters.
After his infamous Masters collapse, McIlroy finished third in the Malaysian Open and seems to be getting back on track. He hit 66 and 62 for his final rounds with 17 birdies and an eagle at the Wells Fargo Championship last year. McIlroy passed Tiger Woods to become No. 6 in the world rankings. Woods is sitting this one out with a knee injury.
Martin Kaymer is third in the outright odds at Quail Hollow, but other than a runner-up finish at the WGC-Matchplay Championship and ninth-place finish in Malaysia, he has been unimpressive this year. He missed the cut for the fourth straight time at the Masters and finished 11th here in 2009.
Nick Watney finished tied for 20th in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and won the WGC-Cadillac Championship this year. He has five top 25 finishes in six appearances at Wells Fargo but hasn’t finished above 11th. Jim Furyk has some value as a winner in 2006 and runner-up in 2005. He has four top 10 finishes in six times out at Quail Hollow. He has been solid lately with top five finishes in each of his last four events. Other than that, Bubba Watson won here in 2009. A good finish coupled with his New Orleans win last week could move him to the top 10 world rankings for the first time.
