Wayne Rooney is a media golden boy. Whether it’s his poor play at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa or his short temper in matches, Rooney is all over the headlines. The talented English striker is in the news again and the criticism is related to his play off the field this time. Rooney was accused of paying a woman for sex during the time his wife, Coleen, was pregnant.
It’s no surprise Paddy Powder is offering odds on which will be the first sponsor to drop Rooney from their books. The same market was offered when Tiger Woods’ multiple affairs were exposed. Rooney’s situation is similar to Woods. His name is recognizable throughout the world so it puts sponsors in a tough place, since the sex scandal can diminish sales. The story says Rooney paid £1,000 or more per night for sex with prostitute Jennifer Thompson while his wife was pregnant. He told his wife that the story is true. Rooney married in 2008 and they have one child. Coleen has earned an estimated £10 million from TV work so she said she doesn’t need him anymore.
England plays Tuesday night against Switzerland in the European Cup qualifying games. Some are suggesting Rooney won’t be mentally fit to play in the Euro 2012 qualifier. But, Rooney has vowed the scandal won’t affect his play. His teammates like captain Steven Gerrard are backing him in that regard. It should be noted that Woods hasn’t played like himself and no longer dominates the game of golf since his scandal broke. As far as sponsors go, Nike, Coca Cola and EA Sports are sticking with Rooney for now. We will soon see if Asda, Ford and Nokia feel the same way. England boss Fabio Capello is desperate for a win so Rooney should play in the match against the Swiss. But, it’s only a matter of time before Coleen sways public opinion to her side for such an act.
