Just like the men’s side of the Australian Open, the women’s side features a surprise contender as well in the semifinals. Ninth seed Na Li will face World #1 Caroline Wozniacki. World #2 Vera Zvonareva plays tournament favorite Kim Clijsters. It’s a chance for the world’s top two female tennis players to prove themselves after receiving criticism for their ranking despite having no Grand Slam titles.

Zvonareva reached the finals of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open last year. Clijsters is a former World #1 and has three U.S. Open titles. Li was a semifinalist in Melbourne last year and is riding a 10-match winning streak, which includes a win over Clijsters in the Sydney International final. With Serena Williams sitting this one out, it was anyone’s game. But when world #5 Venus Williams went down in the third round with a groin injury, it opened the doors for Li from the same draw.

Li has won the last two meetings against Wozniacki, most recently a straight sets victory in the fourth round of the Australian Open last year. Zvonareva has won three of the past four meetings with Clijsters, except for last year’s U.S. Open when the Belgian lost only three games. There is plenty of value in these upcoming semifinal matches so take advantage.
