The French Open began on Monday and we are already in to the third round. There are plenty of familiar faces left in the tennis tournament like Rafael Nadal, Robin Soderling, Andy Murray, David Ferrer, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. The second Grand Slam of the season has some interesting storylines with reigning champion and No. 1 seed Nadal leading the outright betting and No. 2 seed Djokovic emerging as a contender.
Including this year, Nadal has won 44 of 47 matches at Roland Garros. Another French Open title would tie him with Bjorn Borg’s record six. Nadal faces Croatian Antonio Veic in the third round.
Djokovic beat Nadal in two straight clay court finals for the Madrid and Rome Masters. Instead of three sets, it would have to be over five sets this time. He is one of three to beat Nadal more than once on clay. Djokovic is one match win away from tying John McEnroe’s 1984 record start of 42 match wins. He is a two-time French Open semifinalist and faces Juan Martin del Potro in the third round.
No. 3 seed Federer has also beaten Nadal more than once on clay. He is having a down year after losing to Richard Gasquet in the third round in Rome last week. It was the first time he failed to reach the quarterfinals of a tournament in a year. The 16-time Grand Slam winner and 2009 French Open champion can’t be overlooked. He faces Serbian Janko Tipsarevic in the third round.
No. 4 seed Andy Murray is just behind Federer in the odds. The Brit has never made it past the final eight at Roland Garros, but put up a good fight again Djokovic in the Rome semifinals last week. He plays German Michael Berrer in the third round.
Del Potro reached reach the 2009 semifinals here but he is getting over injuries like Murray. Ferrer lost to Nadal in both of his clay court final appearances but the Australian Open semifinalist has some value. He faces Sergiy Stakhovsky of the Ukraine next. Robin Soderling is a good long shot bet as the only man to beat Nadal at the 2009 French Open. He was a finalist last year and plays Argentinean Leonardo Mayer next.
