Mark Cavendish won the 11th stage of the Tour de France today. The sprint specialist got help from his teammate Mark Renshaw, who was ejected from the race Thursday for his aggressive tactics.
Andy Schleck of Luxembourg is still the overall leader. He spent much of the race alongside defending Tour de France champion Alberto Contador. During the final sprint, Renshaw head-butted Julian Dean three times to try to push him out of the way. Renshaw is the lead-out man for Cavendis and Dean is the lead-out man for U.S. sprinter Tyler Farrar. Bumping is expected during the race but this violation was deemed “flagrant” and Renshaw was removed from the race.
Cavendish said Dean attempted to elbow Renshaw and that his teammate was just preventing the lane from being closed. Despite the drama, Cavendish still comes out as the third stage winner on the 114.6-mile jaunt from Sisteron to Bourg-les-Valence. Allessandro Petacchi of Italy came in second. It is still early in the 20-stage Tour de France but check out the best odds below to bet on the tournament winner.
