The sultans of swat take center stage tonight in the MLB 2010 State Farm Home Run Derby, with the All-Star Game playing tomorrow. Miguel Cabrera leads the odds, slightly ahead of David Ortiz. This will be the first Home Run Derby for five of the eight competitors.
This is Miguel Cabrera’s fifth All-Star Game and second Home Run Derby. The Detroit Tigers first baseman has 22 home runs under his belt at the break. He has consistently hit between 33 and 37 homers in five of the past six seasons. He is predicted the short winner but, since his move from the outfield to first base, he may lack the stamina to go all the way now. He made it to the second round of the 2007 Derby with nine home runs, but his six in the semifinals weren’t enough to get through.
David Ortiz is competing in his sixth All-Star Game and has the most Derby experience, this being his fourth. The Boston Red Sox DH has 17 home runs at the break. His career high is 54 in 2006, but he has hit only 28 and 23 in the last two seasons. Big Papi has made it into the semifinals in 2005 and 2006 but may lack the stamina to go the distance at age 34.
Corey Hart (not the “Sunglasses at Night” guy) is playing in his second All-Star Game and first Home Run Derby. Not known as a power guy, the Milwaukee Brewers outfielder has 20 homers at the break, just short of his season career high of 24 in 2007.
Nick Swisher is another newbie. This is the first All-Star Game and Home Run Derby for the New York Yankees outfielder, who will no doubt be a popular bet for Yankee fans. Swisher has 15 home runs in the first half, thanks in large part to a hitter friendly New Yankee Stadium. His career high was 35 homers in 2006.
Matt Holliday is competing in his fourth All-Star Game and second Home Run Derby. The St. Louis Cardinals outfielder has 15 dingers on the year and hit a career high 36 in 2007. Holliday has had it easy in the majors playing at Coors Field for the majority of his career and now hitting behind Albert Pujols. In the 2007 Derby, Holliday made it to the semifinals.
Surprisingly, Vernon Wells is playing in his first Home Run Derby in his third All-Star appearance. The Toronto Blue Jays outfielder has 19 long balls so far this year and hit a career high 33 in 2003. He’s getting on in age but has the power to make an impact as a dark horse.
Hanley Ramirez, shortstop for the Florida Marlins, is in his third straight All-Star Game and first Home Run Derby. He has hit 13 homers so far and had a career high 33 in 2008. The youngster isn’t enough of a power guy to warrant backing in your online gambling.
Chris Young, an outfielder for the Arizona Diamondbacks, is making his first All-Star and Home Run Derby appearances. He has 15 home runs at the break and hit a career high 32 in 2007. That was his first full big league season so he’ll have the stamina.
