There were four NCAA Tournament games that came down to the wire yesterday in the second round. One resulted in an upset and the other three saw favorites sneaking into the third round. Curiously enough, there was one buzzer beater from each region.

First on the day was Matt Howard’s put-back as the buzzer sounded for No. 8 Butler’s 60-58 win over No. 9 Old Dominion. Butler had the ball tied at 58 for the last possession of the game. Shawn Vanzant threw up an ill-advised runner while failing to draw a foul. Andrew Smith was under the basket to tip it in but the tip went to the other side of the backboard. The savvy senior Matt Howard snuck in for the rebound and put-back as time expired to advance in the Southeast Region.

Shortly after that, No. 13 Morehead State upset No. 4 Louisville in the Southwest Region thanks to Demonte Harper’s long three-pointer with 4.2 seconds left. Harper squared up nicely at the top of the key for the 62-61 lead. Louisville got the ball up quickly and had a chance at a three. A flailing Mike Marra looked to be fouled by Sam Goodman on the three-point attempt but it was the right no-call as Goodman went straight up.

In the West Region, No. 7 Temple snuck by No. 10 Penn State. It was perhaps the most exciting last 30 seconds of March Madness so far. Penn State’s Talor Battle hit a long three to tie it at 64 with 14.2 seconds left. Temple responded with an isolation on Juan Fernandez. The 6-foot-4 Fernandez hit a leaner over the 6-foot-1 Tim Frazier near the free-throw line with less than a second left. His height got Temple the 66-64 win.

Last on the day was No. 4 Kentucky surviving against No. 13 Princeton. Princeton was sticking with Kentucky and had many leads. Their big men were outplaying the Wildcats and hinting a possible upset. But after struggling all game, Kentucky’s Brandon Knight hit a tough, game-winning layup with less than two seconds left for a 59-57 victory.
