Aside from the European Nedbank Golf Challenge, there is a big golf tournament on American soil this week as well. The Chevron World Challenge tees off at the Sherwood Golf Club in California. The event, which features seven of the world’s top 10 players, is hosted by World #2 Tiger Woods and the annual golf tournament is in its 12th year. Don’t ask me why, but Woods leads the odds yet again despite not winning a tournament all year. Granted, this is his tournament but there are better options for your sports betting.
The Europeans have a stronghold on the 18-man field. World #7 Paul Casey is competing, coming off a pair of sixth place finishes at the Dubai World Championship and the HSBC World Championship. Other Europeans include Ian Poulter, who won the Hong Kong Open and came in second in Dubai, and Rory McIlroy. The young Irishman is due for a win after taking Quail Hollow back in May. He finished fifth in Dubai and sixth in Hong Kong. U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell will play after tying for 13th in Dubai, which put him in the runner-up spot behind Martin Kaymer in the Race to Dubai. The last of the best European challengers includes World #9 Luke Donald. The Englishman has finished in the top 10 in five of his last six tournaments and has one tour win.
The American to watch is World #6 Jim Furyk. After winning the Tour Championship in September, he took a long break. That could work against him, but he is the defending Chevron champion. Steve Stricker will be looking for his third win on the year after taking the Northern Trust Open and the John Deere Classic, among other top 10 golf finishes.
