The second round of the Australian Open began today. With Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer cruising to victories in the first round, they still lead the odds to win the tennis tournament in Melbourne.

The seedings were based on world rankings, so Nadal was first and Federer was second. Nadal is looking for his first Australian Open championship. It would finally give him that illusive career Grand Slam since he already has French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open titles under his belt. He beat Federer at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne in the epic 2009 match. The Spaniard faces American Ryan Sweeting in the second round.

Federer is the defending Australian Open champ after thoroughly beating Andy Murray last year. The four-time winner is in the draw opposite of Nadal, as usual. If he fails to win, it would be the first time he hasn’t held at least one Grand Slam title since 2003. He faces Frenchman Gilles Simon in the second round.

Murray came in seeded fifth in his quest for his first career Grand Slam. He takes on Illya Marchenko from the Ukraine in the second round. If all goes to plan, he could take on Robin Soderling or former U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro in the quarterfinals. It would be a stretch to bet the inconsistent Brit to progress any further than that.

Soderling fell in the world rankings to fifth so he is seeded fourth in the Australian Open. Melbourne hasn’t been kind to him in the past though after going out in the first round last year. The Swede has great value to win and faces Giles Muller from Luxembourg in the second round. World #3 Novak Djokovic is the third seed and had an easy win over Marcel Granollers in the first round. Djokovic lost to Nadal in the U.S. Open final last year. The Serb faces Ivan Dodig from Croatia in the second round.
