The ATP Masters Series is in Italy this week for the Rome Masters in preparation for the French Open later this month. Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were the tennis tournament favorites and they have qualified for the quarterfinals.
For the first time in a year, Roger Federer failed to reach the quarterfinals of a tournament, losing to France’s Richard Gasquet in three sets. Nadal almost withdrew from his match with a fever, but he battled through it and beat Feliciano Lopez in straight sets. Nadal, who has won the Rome Masters for five of the last six years, decided to play at the last minute. His 37-match winnings streak on clay ended Sunday when Novak Djokovic beat him in the Madrid Open final.
Djokovic is on a 34-match winning streak after beating Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets to get to the quarterfinals. Noteworthy for sports betting, if Nadal loses before the semi-finals, Djokovic could overtake him at the top of the world rankings. Nadal said he would take no chances with his health with the French Open a little over a week away. World No. 4 Andy Murray also advanced and will play German Florian Mayer. World No. 7 Tomas Berdych faces Gasquet. World No. 5 Robin Soderling plays Djokovic.
Djokovic has six titles this year, including the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Miami Masters. He won in Rome in 2008. His 34-match winning streak is second to John McEnroe’s 42 in 1984. But Nadal hasn’t been beaten on clay since the 2009 French Open. He is the defending champion in Rome and has only lost once in 28 matches there.
