We’re into the second round of the NBA playoffs and we’ve already seen plenty of upsets. No. 1 seeded San Antonio went down in the first round. The defending champion Lakers are in trouble, down 2-0 to Dallas. The Atlanta Hawks and Chicago Bulls are split at one game apiece going into the third game tonight in Atlanta.

The Hawks already knocked out an Orlando team that swept them in the first round last year. They’re looking to continue their upset run against Chicago, who won 18 more games than them during the regular season. After an eye-opening in the first game, the Bulls got back to the basics that led them to the best record in the league and an MVP selection for Derrick Rose. They crashed the boards for a 58-39 rebound advantage and held Atlanta to 34% shooting.

When Atlanta’s individual stars play together, they can be lethal. They were trailing by only six points with four minutes left in Game 2. Hawks rookie coach Larry Drew didn’t call it a knockout blow though and Game 3 should be a sellout crowd for the attendance-challenged city.

It took only five games for Chicago to put away Indiana in the first round, but every game was close. It will be a long, tough haul for its first NBA title since Michael Jordan reigned supreme. The Bulls need more production from Carlos Boozer, who had eight points and was blocked four times against Atlanta on Thursday night. Boozer is playing with a turf toe injury sustained against Indiana. Rose can be better. The floor leader is averaging 24.5 point per game but is shooting just 39% and has 11 total turnovers.

For Atlanta, Jeff Teague has filled in nicely for the injured Kirk Hinrich. He has contained Rose and averaged 15.5 points per game offensively with only one turnover. After Joe Johnson and Jamal Crawford lit up the scoreboard in Game 1, they were double-teamed in Game 2. That’s when role players like Al Horford need to step it up.

Chicago is 27-16 SU and 26-17 ATS on the road during the regular season and playoffs combined. The Bulls won two of three regular season games against Atlanta.
