While the PGA Tour moves to Florida for The Players Championship, the European Tour goes to Majorca this week for the Iberdrola Open beginning Thursday. A lot of quality players are missing this golf tournament so it should be a fairly open field at the Pula Golf Club in Son Servera.
Thomas Aiken won the Open de Espana last week for his first European Tour victory and leads the outright odds this week. The South African previously tied for sixth at the Qatar Masters and tied for seventh at the Dubai Desert Classic, but it is very difficult to get two consecutive wins on the tour. Gregory Bourdy is second in the odds and won the 2007 Mallorca Classic that was played on this course. The Frenchman finished runner-up at the Malaysian Open and 15th at the Open de Espana.
The Mallorca Classic was won by a Spaniard three times in five years of running. Two Spaniards have good value this week with Jose Manuel Lara and Pablo Larrazabal. Lara hasn’t finished outside the top 20 in five appearances here. Larrazabal tied for third at the Open de Espana.
Paul Lawrie has some value after finishing fifth at the Open de Espana and winning the Open de Andalucia. Chris Wood and Danny Willet are each still looking for their first European Tour win. Wood finished fifth here last year. Willett finished seventh at the China Open but 24th in Spain last week.
